The two different sides

For many incoming freshmen, adjusting to high school responsibilities has proven to be strenuous task. With the help of teachers and other various high school faculty they have learned how to handle the load. For any student receiving help in adapting to responsibilities they generally accept the assistance. For example the school faculty have placed Student Leadership Team members in all freshman advisories, but do the SLT members really help?

For some students having SLT members in advisory has been a helpful tool, but for others they feel as if the SLT members have not contributed anything to help them in high school. Freshman Blake Jungman shares that while not all lessons are helpful some can be. Jungman’s favorite lesson would be the one that helps freshman for finals.

“Lessons have helped me become better prepared for tests and quizzes,” said Jungman.

In other advisories many SLT members do not perform the lessons with the freshmen, and the freshmen end up having to learn as they go.  Instead of helping prepare the students for upcoming high school events, the SLT members neglect freshmen students. For freshman Chloe Kimbrell, her advisory SLT members usually do not talk to the freshmen, so they end up having to play mumball to pass the time.

“They [SLT members] aren’t really helpful to my advisory,” said Kimbrell.

While many freshman want to put the blame on SLT Members for not being helpful to their high school experience, many of the reasons the SLT members cannot do more to help is out of their control. But many of the advisory lessons are planned by the SLT Executive Board, and not the SLT members themselves. While SLT members such as Jordan Gregory do their best to tweak the lessons so they better fit high school students, they can only do so much.

“We try to treat the freshmen like they’re not five year olds, and some of the lessons come across directed towards small children,” said Gregory.

For freshmen such as Jungman, when SLT members share their own personal experiences throughout high school and present them with tools for upcoming responsibilities, have been very beneficial. However, for others like Kimbrell, they feel neglected and these experiences have been withheld from them, so they struggle to adjust. Overall, SLT Members have been beneficial for freshmen in advisories.
