Aaron Fuller: The option of classes is suffering

The selection of classes available is vast, but it may not be enough. What is offered will never sate the large variety of creative students, but certain classes should be added to help patch the ever-growing hole. Not only is this hole expanding with the creativity of students, but traditional classes have continuously been removed because the knowledge is not considered to be as valuable as it once was.

Many students think that what we have is sufficient with arts and different skills. However, in the high school, all of our courses are standard and specialized skill cannot be developed until college. A few more courses should be considered. For example, our school is missing sufficient classes for the engineering industry. Secondly, we can no longer express our own ways of learning english. English courses are, for the most part, only the core English classes. Newspaper, Debate, and other courses no longer count towards our English credits. Third and last, freshman and sophomores do not get to pick nearly as many classes as upperclassman and therefore cannot get into as many classes that require prerequisites later in their high school career.

“I feel like there is not enough diversity,” says Senior Alex Demers. “Having more classes would allow for students to be able to pick between more than just two foreign languages.”

Classes are disappearing before our eyes, and students see a large decrease in the amount of practical arts that people are able to take. Raymore Peculiar High School needs Multimedia classes where students learn to critique and create advertisements, understand what to buy and what not to buy, and other types of media we see everywhere. Students should be able to take classes where they can evaluate the different things that they will need in life outside of school and relate it to their education. Along with these, many foreign languages are missing from our High School. Chinese culture and language is gone, along with Japanese, German, Latin, Italian, Russian, and more are all available in other high schools. The classes that we need at this high school are lacking.

Whether or not students feel like they are locked into a limited amount of choices, it is fact that the classes we offer at our High School have large holes in between them. Our school needs classes that will allow students to fully express themselves and prepare for their careers in the most effective way they can.
