High school soccer has a unique way of shaping athletes, and for Landan Moots, a standout player in the class of 2025, it has been a journey defined by leadership, commitment, and a strong sense of teamwork. Known for his athleticism and determination, Moots combines individual talent with a deep focus on team success, making him an invaluable asset to his soccer team.
Moots’s passion for soccer was ignited at a young age, thanks in large part to his older brothers and his best friend, senior Will Day.
“My best friend Will, he’s brave, strong, fearless, and a leader. I don’t think I would have really found that spark for soccer without Will,” Moots shared.
His early exposure to the game through his brothers and the influence of Day helped him discover the sport’s potential and gave him the drive to pursue it seriously.
One of Moots’ most cherished memories comes from last season’s district final. Although his team fell short, the experience of competing against Rockhurst with his friends was unforgettable.
“That was probably the best season I’ve ever had, and you just don’t get to relive those moments, so I miss that and it’s probably my most memorable moment,” Moots said.
This reflection reveals the lasting impact of those shared moments, which remain special despite the loss.
Before every match, Moots takes time to mentally prepare, often by putting in his AirPods to get into the right mood. He also knows the importance of team morale and plays an active role in energizing his teammates.
“I really value my sound, and I like to talk to the boys, get all lighthearted, get some jokes going, and get the locker room energy right,” Moots explained.
His ability to motivate and engage his teammates shows his leadership both on and off the field.
On the field, Moots is known for his exceptional finishing ability, which has been critical in tight games.
“To be honest, I think I’m pretty athletic, so that enables me to be able to finish those points in an impressive fashion,” said Moots.
His athleticism allows him to capitalize on opportunities, securing wins for his team when it counts the most.
For younger players aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Moots offers practical advice.
“Go out there and run your hardest, and just put the ball in the net. Keep in mind that you need to have a good attitude,” he said.
His emphasis on effort and attitude highlights the essential traits needed for success in competitive sports like high school varsity soccer.
Despite a challenging season for his team, Moots has maintained a resilient mindset. He understands the importance of moving on after a loss and staying focused on the next opportunity.
“You just have to have the mind of a goldfish, you know? If something goes wrong, you got to instantly forget it and just move on to the next thing,” Moots shared. This mentality enables him to overcome setbacks and keep pushing forward.
Teamwork is a cornerstone of Moots’ approach to the game. He stresses that success on the field is not just about individual performance, but about working as a cohesive unit.
“Teamwork is huge for me, you know, if you’re not playing your role, you’re not playing for the team. Everyone has a goal, and it takes effort from everybody on the team to make sure that everyone can accomplish their own personal goals,” Moots said.
His perspective reinforces the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in achieving collective success.
Even during intense seasons, Moots knows how to unwind and maintain a positive team dynamic.
After a big win, he and his teammates often celebrate together, whether by grabbing a meal or engaging in fun locker room rituals.
“Me and some of the boys will maybe go to Cane’s, or just get hype in the locker room, or go to the fans and do the fight song,” Moots said.
These moments of celebration help the team relax, bond, and keep their spirits high.
Throughout his soccer career, Moots has learned the importance of focusing on what he can control.
“If you’re not going to give 100% on something that you can control at the moment, there isn’t any reason to try anyway,” Moots said.
This mindset allows him to stay focused on the fundamentals and continually improve his game, no matter the external challenges.
Moots’ approach to soccer exemplifies the values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Whether preparing for a match, motivating his teammates, or reflecting on his growth, Moots consistently demonstrates the leadership and commitment that have made him a key figure on his soccer team.
