At the end of May last year, the girls’ track team advanced to the state competition and won medals, placing in the top five for both the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. These girls have come a long way. The team consisted of Sarai Clark, a senior; Kynah Simmons, also a senior; and Amaya Hill and Moriah Tucker, who were freshmen at the time. Let’s see how the girls felt about going to state. Despite encountering some difficulties with their handoff, they managed to qualify for state.
“First, I was thankful to God. It felt amazing, and I felt confident going in because of my training and the support of my teammates,” said Simmons.
The track girls performed well in every meet, finishing in either first or second place in each race. Their toughest opponent was Liberty North, who challenged them every time they faced off. One team usually came out on top, mostly our girls’ track team. We beat Liberty North during the district and sectional competitions.
“The opponents were tough competitors, and I’m excited to see and compete against them again this season,” said Tucker.
This season, the track girls aim to work with the freshmen to help them reach their full potential and advance to the next level. They also aspire to qualify for state in their individual races. The girls are determined to win gold medals and claim a spot at state. For most of them, this will be their last chance to make it to state, but some leaders will still be available to guide the younger athletes.
“I will help the freshmen get faster by teaching them everything I was taught and ensuring they don’t repeat the same mistakes I made,” said Hill.
The girls who made it to state dominated their opponents, and their parents were very excited for them. They took countless pictures by the podium. They celebrated their victory by going out to eat. Now, they want to come back this year and achieve the same success, but with even more medals. They are determined to come out this season stronger and faster.
