Chiefs Moment of Unity

Just as the 2020 NFL season kicked off, The Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans received large amounts of booing from their fans. This was due to the moment of unity against racism the team participated in on the field of Arrowhead Stadium. The announcer began by asking for fans to join the teams in a moment of silence to acknowledge the fight for equality taking place in America. The boos began after the Texans had joined the Chiefs during the moment of silence. These boos lasted around 5 to 10 seconds as the Chiefs linked arms, joined by the Texans at the end zone.

The song “Lift Every Voice and Song” was performed by Alicia Keys while the video of the Black Lives Matter movement was played on the scoreboard. It is hard to determine if the fans were booing at the moment of unity, or if it was due to the Texans for not being on the field during the National Anthem. Either way, the boos distrurbed the intended moment of silence that was expected across the stadium, and upset some of the players and other fans. The flag was not used or disrespected in any way and this intended moment of unity did not disrupt any other events such as the National Anthem or the Star Spangled Banner, leaving many members of the event confused as to why they received the backlash that they did.
