Coming home to tradition

Homecoming has been a day for students for generations to look forward to, it is a day to celebrate, and to dance the night away with your date or your friends. Has this age old day of celebration changed?

Tradition changes with time, homecoming is not the same as it is been compared to ten, twenty, or even thirty years ago. Personal Finance and Accounting teacher Tina Fultz tells the differences of her homecoming experiences compared to today’s experience.

“The switch with the parade makes it a lot different. Having a big event to end the day,

we got to ride in the back of cars around the track, there was a real parade. People would decorate their trucks, and you would take those around the track,” said Fultz.

When Fultz went to high school, there were still some similarities like a parade, a spirit week, and a homecoming dance. But what would happen during these events was much different.

“We still have great crowds, and great team spirit, That was the only thing you could do Friday night, and everybody went to the Friday night games, of course, so you were standing for homecoming on dirt instead of wood,” said Fultz.

Times have changed from having homecoming in the dome, dancing in the aux gym or the academy.  English teacher Haleigh.Thompson has even had her own experience with homecoming.

“I think it is wasn’t a big thing, we just went out to dinner, and nothing fancier, then we’d get together, and get ready, then go to the dance,” said Thompson.

There has been a change with how students today treat homecoming compared to the past. Students treat homecoming with higher levels of excitement than past student have.

“I think it wasn’t as big of a deal as it was now. It was still exciting a lot of people went, but we didn’t do the parade that you guys do, and I think that makes it more fun when they did like shopping cart floats,” said Thompson.

Homecoming tradition does not die. Even with the older generations that have gone to high school recognize the energy behind homecoming.

“It is kinda cool to see people who have graduated come back. That’s usually when I get to see the people that graduated ten years ago come back” said Fultz.

Homecoming tradition has changed as time has continued. With the introduction of new technology, and new innovations, younger generations have taken tradition, and changed it to help it thrive in changing times.
