Pouring one more cup

The Daily Grind is one of many features we have at the school, where students can go to get a coffee or a good morning snack before class. Accounting teacher, Tina Fultz, and senior, Andrew Luebbert, help run and improve the shop on a daily basis.
The Daily Grind opened up on September 15, 2014 and has always been run by students at the school.
“The coffee shop is a fully functioning entity ran by and for students. Dual credit accounting students maintain and run the shop through the duration of the year. Four managers and one employee each week deliver quality coffee and tea products that comply with the state and federal guidelines of nutrition,” says Fultz.

When it comes to adding new products to the menu, the item has to pass requirements. The students than make sure they make enough profit for it to be added for everyone.

“We have to check the health requirements and make sure they follow the standards and then we calculate the profit we would make for each sale of the item and whether or not it is worth it. Finally, we just have to advertise the new item and it is added,” states Luebbert.

At the beginning, The Daily Grind had only a small space and it was not as big as it is now. The students were only given a small concession stand to give and make the coffee for students.

“We started in the Theatre Concession stand and it has really grown over the years,” Fultz explains.

The employees of The Daily Grind are always working on making the coffee shop better than it ever has been. They have made some improvements and accomplishments since it started.

“The biggest advancement is probably the food items we have added this year, they constantly bring in high profit and sales,” Luebbert explains.

The money the students collect aren’t just for them but go to a place of the students choice. It is constantly going to many different organizations that help with our school.

“Each month students determine where the profits are used. The proceeds have gone towards Special Olympics, the American Cancer Society, they provide scholarships and contributed to the FBLA club. The students find a different organization each month to donate any extra proceeds made,” said Fultz.

The Daily Grind also makes a big impact on the students working at the shop. There are many factors that the students enjoy about the shop and the people that come to buy coffee.

“I really love working at the daily grind and getting to see new people everyday, I would say overall the Daily Grind has had a positive impact on my life,” said Luebbert.

Overall, The Daily Grind has grown to be something huge for not only the students who purchase a coffee but also the students who work and run the shop. Over the years, the students worked hard to get to the place they are at now. The Daily Grind is a special place to many and has improved more than ever.
