Editorial: Chiefs season re-cap
January 22, 2019
Everybody knows by now that the Chiefs took a season ending loss to the Patriots in overtime. Chiefs ended the season at 13-5, and went to the AFC championship game for the first time since 1993. This loss is hard to take in for the fans who have been around before Mahomes, who have seen playoff losses over and over. What really made this loss the worst was the fact that it was to the Patriots who we had a close 43-40 point game earlier in the season. With luck, New England won the toss to start overtime electing to receive first. This game was all up to the coin toss, let’s face it Brady and Mahomes are both high caliber quarterbacks who are not going to miss on a game winning overtime drive. There is a lot to talk about from the game, but I would rather talk about the future. First off, Mahomes, who is only 23, is not going anywhere, he is projected to sign a 200 million dollar contract. The next big topic is our defense, will Bob Sutton and other defensive staff stay? It is too soon to determine if head coach Andy Reid will fire Bob Sutton, but it could be for the better. Our offense is at its peak we have multiple threats that Mahomes can go to at any point of the game. Our defense, on the other hand, was at the bottom of the rankings when it came to run and pass coverage. It is important to keep in in mind how Andy Reid coaches, he will run drills till the players get it down and has 195 wins under his belt, he is determined to win. The Chiefs gave up more first downs than any other team in NFL history, therefore, there is work to be done on the defense side of the ball. Hopefully the Rams can take home the Lombardi trophy so Kansas City can get the closure we need. Even if Tom Brady wins the Super Bowl, all Chiefs fans should look at the future and what this team can do with better coaching staff, and more work put in during the off-season.
