Forensics and debate qualify for nationals
May 4, 2016
The Debate and Forensics team concluded their season by having Ryanne Linn, Cameron Perry, Ian Fleming, Nick Schneider, Alison Gillespie, Brooke Kelly, Dalton Russell, Austin Moulder and Cameron Leonard qualify to the National Speech and Debate Tournament.
For junior Dalton Russell, qualifying to nationals was a monumental moment with his debate partner junior Austin Moulder.
“We accomplished something that, at the beginning of the year, no one expected and to be quite honest we didn’t expect it either but it was always the goal and it was incredible to achieve it,” said Russell.
More than 3,000 schools will be competing to have their qualifiers become national champions. Qualifiers earned a spot for Nationals at the ShowMe District Tournament.
Junior Austin Moulder has been to nationals before for a forensics event but this year he qualified in policy debate. Policy debate is a 90 minute debate between two teams.
“Qualifying was pretty awesome. I was a bit under the weather but I knew I could rely on my partner Dalton to get me through the rounds,” said Moulder.
For senior Cameron Leonard qualifying to nationals was an accomplishment well earned. Leonard qualified in student congress. Competitors in student congress prepare three minute speeches on issues prevalent within the United States. Only the top five competitors voted by the judges qualify to Nationals.
“It was pretty great, I’ve been working to do that for 6 years,” said Leonard.
Similar to Leonard, senior Brooke Kelly felt as if her hard work completely paid off. Kelly qualified in dramatic interpretation also known as DI. In DI competitors take a 7-10 minute piece and perform it for judges.
“I have been working for nationals since my freshman year of high school, I have been dreaming about it for four years. I mean it’s all I’ve ever wanted. It was my biggest goal. Hearing my name get called in front of everybody was really great,” said Kelly.
Ian Fleming and Nick Schneider qualified in duo interpretation. Ryanne Linn and Cameron Perry qualified in humorous interpretation.
The theme of this year’s national tournament is “set your sights high” and will be held in Salt Lake CIty, Utah. Moulder already has set his sights high for the NSDA Tournament on June 12-17.
“I will take some pictures in June, whenever we win nationals,” said Moulder.
