Movie review: The Forest
February 23, 2016
Aokigahara forest (suicide forest), located at the base of Mt. Fuji is known to have had over 500 confirmed suicides since the 1950’s. Horror film “The Forest” recently came out in theatres reenacting events that have occurred in this forest.
Directed by Jason Zada, the film “The Forest” is quite a jump scare, with hanging corpses, haunting flashbacks, ghosts, etc. The movie starts with Sara (Starring Natalie Dormer), realizing something was wrong with her sister, so she went to the last known place of Jess. When Sara arrives in Japan she figures out that Jess was an english teacher at a private school, she goes to the school to find out that Jess has been missing for days and her last whereabouts were in the Aokigahara forest. Sara goes to the forest and was told to “stay on the path” due to the hauntings. Accompanied by tour guide Michi (Played by Yukiyoshi Ozawa), and journalist Aiden (Played by Taylor Kinney). Searching through the forest Sara discovers a yellow tent Sara and Jess used as kids, and goes off the path to look. Seeing that Jess is not there, she demands to stay at the tent until Jess returns. Michi warning Sara that it is not a good idea to stay past dark, she stays anyways with Aiden by her side. Sara falls asleep and begins to see and hear things. Being taunted in the tent by her imaginations, she quickly exits the tent. She begins to see and hear a girl saying that the man she was with is dangerous and not who she thinks he is. She wakes up and later realizes that Aiden was only there to get a story out of her, she freaks out and goes way off the path, then the search for her sister turns into a nightmare.
WARNING SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
Sara goes into her childhood home to see the horrific hallucination of the death of her parents, her father “waking up”, grabs Sara’s arm and thinking that she was cutting her father’s arm to get him off her, she ends up cutting herself which is the cause of her death. Jess ends up escaping and realizing Sara is dead Jess suggests that they do not search for her.
If you are into scary and creepy things then i would recommend this movie, if you are not into any of that and you are easily triggered by suicide then this will not be the movie for you to watch. My overall opinion about the movie was good, it just depends on your interests.
