Big break

For every dancer, their dream is to get a lead role or to catch their “big break”. For senior Keni White this dream came true when she was offered a role in  Krizz Kaliko/Tech N9ne’s upcoming music video.

Keni White started her dance career at Donna’s Doorway to Dance and Drama when she was just three years old. She now continues her training at Studio J.  She has had many accomplishments in her career already, such as: being a varsity Prowler for three years, winning dance related scholarships, offered jobs in music videos and photoshoots, and winning a national title.

One of White’s biggest opportunities will be her newest role in the  Kansas City native Tech N9ne’s music video. The video is being shot on March 6, but to prepare White has had to attend rehearsals all week from 9-10:30pm.

“I went to an open audition at a studio, and what we did was we learned a combo and then we basically just performed it in groups. We got feedback either that night or the next day. Mine was that night, right after the audition, and they told me I was in,” said White.

“There’s a number of things I want to do, but I do want to own my own studio later down the line when I can’t kick my leg to my face. I would like to do commercial work, and also cruise lines,” said White.

Before White moves onto owning a studio or dancing for cruise lines, she has a job to do here in Kansas City. For an opportunity like this, people are sure to be talking about it. Fellow dancer and friend Ashley Ahrens is happy for White’s new opportunity.

“I think Keni is definitely a good choice for a video like this because she really likes rap, so it kinda fits her style. She likes to do hip hop or basically any type of dance,” said senior, Ashley Ahrens.

“We haven’t started the process of figuring out lead roles, like some people will be like selling popcorn or pushing a stroller, or something like that. But we haven’t figured any of that out yet, we’re just doing choreography and just drilling it over and over at every practice,” said White.

Being a part of something like this is nothing new for Keni White, but it does get her name out in the world for more opportunities to help fulfill her hopes and dreams of her future career. She encourages anyone who wants to follow their dreams, whether it’s in the dance world or something completely different.

“My advice to them would be to work extremely hard, nothing comes easy in this world and if you want something then you absolutely one hundred perecent have to go for it, or you’re never going to get it,” said White.
