Is Donald Trump’s candidacy a joke?

Sarah Herndon, Reporter

On June 16, 2015, Donald Trump officially started his presidential campaign. Donald Trump has said and done some of the most shocking and outrageous things of 2015 and so far in 2016. From being offended that Hillary Clinton needed to use the restroom with his comment “I know where she went–it’s disgusting. I don’t want to talk about it,” to claiming that Muslims should not be allowed to enter the United States. Those comments and everything he said in between were wrong, pretty sexist and extremely racist. So, when presented with the question “Is Trump’s candidacy a joke?” I would have to agree that it definitely is.

Most of the time, when Donald Trump says basically anything, most people do not take it seriously, they think he is a joke and think the fact that he is running can’t be taken seriously. The fact that Trump has any support is pretty appalling. He is praised for ‘stating his mind’ and ‘being honest’ but why should he be praised for that when his comments are not only offensive but also extremely fascist? To begin with, his opinion on Muslims entering the US. So many so-called ‘patriots’ are supporting this idea. Do they know that this opinion is unconstitutional? In fact it violates the very first amendment in the Bill of Rights, which gives citizens the freedom of religion. Which begs the question of how such patriotic people could be so willing to violate the constitution. The people who say these things also make the point that “we should not let the bad Muslims in” or “kick the bad Muslims out” and I don’t know what they classify as a “bad Muslim” but even if that were the case, do these people know how incredibly impossible that is? One can’t just filter through an entire group of people and decide which ones are bad. There are bad Christians who shoot up schools and start drive by shootings, and there are people who have died at the hand of a Christian. Why don’t we filter through the ‘bad’ Christians? One may ask where we would send them, they are from America after all. Well, a majority of the Muslims here have lived in America their whole lives as well, where would you send them? They have not been citizens of any other country. Or even the argument that we can let the Muslims that are here stay here and just not let anymore in, such as the ones who are fleeing from refugee situations. Does Trump and his supporters know that this way of thinking is exactly the same as Hitler and Nazi’s?

Not only is Donald Trump blatantly Islamophobic, but also extremely ignorant on the state that America’s economy is currently in. His opinion on minimum wage is absolutely appalling. Can you believe that he thinks minimum wage is too high? Well, I’m not surprised considering he’s literally a billionaire. Of course he would think that the family living on $7.56 an hour, who also may be reliant on the government for some means of survival, is earning too much. Sure he is a ‘businessman’ but he has no sympathy for the shrinking middle class and blames most of the country’s problems on specific racial/religious groups, which is not fixing the problems at all. It only brainwashes the American people into thinking those groups are honestly the problem.

To continue, I also do not believe that women should be in support of Trump. He is blatantly sexist against the female gender and would not support any idea of females being put in places of leadership as well as supporting “rape culture” which does not only affect women. Trump has said that it is ‘expected’ that there is rape occurring in the military. His exact words on the matter were, “What did these geniuses expect when they put men & women together?” This perpetuates the idea that men cannot control themselves when in the company of women, excusing them from the consequences of committing an actual crime. Trump does not take the needs of women seriously, calling many of the women he has to work with “ugly” or “dumb”. Sure, this could be looked at him insulting just another human being but I will not believe that until he says those same things to the men he has to work with. Women in America will not be safe in this country if Trump were in charge.

To conclude, Trump’s candidacy is, in my opinion, very much a joke. So many people would be in danger during the time that he would possibly be president, even turning citizens against each other. He has said and done even more that could be written about that is not only offensive, but even scary to some. One has to remind themselves that even if he is president, he will not have full power of the government because he would not “make America great again”, he would destroy it.
