Senior Kelci Peter: The Rookie on Color Guard

Outgoing and energetic senior Kelci Peter is what she calls herself the “rookie”  on color guard because she is converting from marching band to color guard and learning the strategies. Peter has many mixed emotions about how she is feeling and how fast she is going to catch up with the rest of her teammates.

Peter’s team consist of four other seniors including Katelyn Galvin, Rebecca Galvin, Madison Blackwell, and Kim Deal. This class of seniors are finalizing a four year career with the color guard. For Peter’s they are more than just teammates, they are role models, and leaders in her first year of the activity.

“I look up to all my fellow seniors because they’ve been doing this all four years and it is a lot harder than I thought it was,” said Peter.

Kelci is realizing that she is still needing to keep up with the rest. She calls herself the “rookie” because everyone on the team has had experience and she is still catching up and being taught.

“I am a senior that is like a freshman being taught because I am new,” said Peter.

Kelci Peter was in marching band for two years and switched over to color guard. There isn’t any  major differences however there was for her. Marching band requires memorization with songs and spots, colorguard is memorization with flags changing and choreography. Peter’s was influenced by many different people to do color guard and see what it is all about.

“A lot of my friends influenced me to do color guard and with me being the manager of the swim team it challenged me to to try two different sports and to manage my time with both sports,” said Peter.

Kelci is a busy body between practicing four days a week for color guard and also being the manager of the swim team, she is constantly doing something with her time and feeling the pressure.

“I am constantly stressed,” said Peter.

Color guard is definitely a team that puts in the effort to make sure they look good and Kelci is also proving herself to everybody with how far she has come.

“We have goals as a team to bring home rewards from competition and they have been working very hard to do so,” said Short.

Peter, and her team are preparing for the upcoming competition in Odessa on October 10th, 2015. This isn’t just some random competition it is also one of teacher and coach Short’s most emotional competition that they compete in. They are hoping to achieve their goals and return home being #1.
