Boys’ Soccer hosts Cancer Awareness Night
September 23, 2015
People all around the world are fighting with over 200 different types of cancer, but locally one soccer team is trying to make a difference. On Monday, September 14, the soccer team hosted the annual Cancer Awareness Night. All of the proceeds from this night were donated to The Cancer Foundation of Kansas City and Susan G Komen Cancer Foundation.
For a few people on the team, this night hits close to home. Students like junior Josiah Baird have family members who have battled cancer.
“My grandma had breast cancer but even though this year isn’t really about breast cancer it’s special to all of us,” said junior Josiah Baird.
Shane McDonald also has special connection to this disease.
“Shoutout to my aunt who has breast cancer, I’m playing for you,” said Mcdonald.
The school hosts a Cancer Awareness Night every year and raises about $1500-$2000. Of that money, none of it goes to the support the soccer team or back to the high school, but only to be donated and help with people’s fight against cancer.
“I feel having awareness is important because cancer needs recognition throughout schools,” said Mcdonald.
This year the main cancer that was focused on was Leukemia and there was a balloon release at the game in memory of people’s loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer.
