Student Senate hosts first Special Olympics Prom in the KC area

As the end of the Special Olympians’ season approaches, the athletes have worked hard to compete against other schools across the Kansas City Metro area. On April 25, in honor or Special Olympians within Kansas City, the third annual Special Olympics prom will be take place.

The prom began as a community service project held by alumni Alexandra Scavuzzo three years ago, and has since been passed on to current sophomores Jordan Gregory and Abby Trautman to continue. Known for being the only Special Olympics prom ever put on by any school around Kansas City, the event is a chance for all Special Olympians around Ray-Pec to come and celebrate all of their success with a night of dancing and festivities.
“Our theme is Beatlemania. One of our athletes, Brendan Elkins, is a senior and really loves the Beatles. He suggested that we should do Beatlemania, and since it’s his senior year we wanted to make it special and do the theme that he wanted,” said Trautman.
With over four months of planning and organizing the event, changes have been made to ensure the event runs smoothly, Trautman gives sight to her goals for the event.
“Planning is going really well. We have a lot done and hope to make prom great this year for everyone joining us,” said Trautman.
Olympians are not the only ones who enjoy this event, as it is an opportunity for volunteers and supporters to be honored as well. There will be decorations representing the decade of the Beatles and music that connect to that era of time.
“Anyone and everyone is invited to come and attend the dance, its an incredibly fun event,” said Gregory.
The morning of the 25 is a big day for the Olympians, as they start off their day at 8 am competing at the Lee’s Summit North track meet. The Prom will begin promptly at 7 pm and will end at 10 pm.
“I expect the Special Olympics Prom to be even better than last year. We’re expecting great weather for the track meet and then a big amount of participants at the dance. It will be a lot of fun and we encourage everyone to come out and enjoy themselves,” said Gregory.
For Special Olympians, prom is a night to encourage and celebrate all of the athletes hard work.
