Katie Johns: The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby
The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby tugs on viewer’s heart strings in a loving and heartbreaking way, alternating every thirty minutes throughout the movie as one learns more about the tragic love story of Eleanor Rigby and Connor Ludlow. The young, happy love quickly morphs into a numb, back-of-their-minds love when Rigby jumps off a bridge into a river after she miscarries her baby boy, and Ludlow hints that he was cheating. The real mystery of the story is what really happened between Ludlow and Rigby to damage their deep love, to the point where Rigby cuts off her hair and blackens her eyes with makeup and runs away to start her life over again, leaving Ludlow in a dazed confusion.
After many almost-rekindling-their love moments, they begin to think that it is impossible to get back to where they begin, and the viewer’s ache when Rigby goes numb of all feeling towards Ludlow.
The relationship between Rigby and her professor throughout the film is what truly brings the real Eleanor back from her tragedy. With Ludlow silently never giving up after repeatedly trying to reach out to Rigby, the end of the movie leaves viewers to question if the lovers do make it through when Rigby follows Ludlow around a rainy, dark street after she decides to move to France to discover her dream.
This movie is a perfect rental for a Valentine’s Day date, as it appeals to artistic minds of both men and women.
