Experience is not a requirement as senior Nate Butcher got voted into Student Senate without any previous experience, and that doesn’t happen very often. Nate decided to be apart of Student Senate to utilize his skills to his fullest potential.

“I felt like I could impact people, on a level of bringing everybody a little bit closer and making a positive impact on the student body,” said Butcher

Government teacher, Jeff Moore, influenced Nate’s decision on joining Student Senate.

“Mr.Moore persuaded me in a way of saying that there’s individuals in Student Senate that have qualities that give back to the school and I felt like I wanted to expand those qualities and I felt like I had some of those qualities and I wanted to put them to good use,” said Butcher.

Nate used to have a preconceived idea of what Student Senate was, but he now sees what it is truly about.

“I never really, truly, seen what Student Senate was about until last year and I perceived it as something different then it was. I perceived it as a mock government. But then when I realized truly what they do, I realized that’s not it at all. It’s truly being there for the students,” said Butcher.

The voting process has a lot of steps to the equation before one is voted into Student Senate.

“In March we will start making announcements of meetings because you have to have parental signature, contracts, and you have to have recommendations from teachers and fill out an application and they run and get voted on by their classmates,” said Moore.

Nate didn’t just get in on a free ride. He had to prove himself to Moore that he was ready to take on the challenges that Student Senate might present to him.

“Well, we would rather have first year seniors than second year seniors, because that means they flunked. Nate is just a charismatic kid who people follow so he is kind of a natural leader. That’s why we need kids like Nathan Butcher.”  said Moore.

Not only does Moore approve of Nate, but his fellow peers accept him as well. Trevor Diepenbrock thinks Nate is a good fit for the Student Senate team.

“I haven’t really known him well until this year, he seems to be working very well in the senate so far, I think he is going to be a great part of team,” said Diepenbrock.

Other than the influence of Moore, Nate has his reasons for joining the Student Senate team. The skills he possesses made him want to make a difference within his peers.

“What made me want to be part of Student Senate is, I guess just the fact of being involved in the school, I love being involved and I love making that positive impact on students and bringing them closer because there are a lot of students who don’t do a lot with the school and I want to be able to get those kids involved,” said Butcher.

Though Nate Butcher joined Student Senate just in his Senior year, he looks to leave his mark for the school’s future, to make it a more positive place where students are involved. Looking at what he has done for his peers, Student Senate looks to add future participants with the qualities that Butcher has had throughout the year so far.
