The competition of movies vs their books

Movies based off of books are really hitting the theaters this year. Mockingjay Part Two and Paper Towns are just two of the best-seller-based movies that came out in 2015. Though these movies tend to get good reviews, readers do not always agree with the director’s’ choices with the film.

Even when several movies are not preferred to their book counterpart, some heavy readers still enjoy the movies almost as much as the book. The Harry Potter movie series and the Hunger Games movie series both seem to please the readers.

“I think, overall, [the movies are] meeting people’s expectations and they’re enjoying them despite the changes that take place from the book to the movie,” said English teacher Paula Dampier.

Divergent is a series of movies that gets plenty of grief from the book-readers. One complaint about that set of films is the way they are divided.

“The Divergent movies don’t follow the book at all,” said freshman Mackinley Clark.

Another common reason readers do not favor the movies compared to the books is for the lack of character development.

“(The characters) move the action along, and they do the setting, but you don’t get the depth of the characters in the movie as you do in a book,” said librarian Genese Mikkelsen.

However, book lovers are not the only people going to see popular movies in theaters. Many movie-goers enjoy book-based films, maybe because they did not read the book.

“If you haven’t read the book, then the movies are even better. I sometimes almost wish that I could see the movie first, and then go back and read the book, because I think that maybe I would like it more,” said Dampier.

Though most book-based movies are generally enjoyed by all audiences, there will always be some avid readers who believe “that the book was better than the movie”.
